"Fame" is a reputation all con-
~:pire to attain. It is hard to gain
and very easy to lose, but still we
deem it worth striving for. Of the
many ingredients for the founda-
tion of virtuous fame, sincerity of
purpose is the most necessary.
Fame built on false merits is very
susceptible to destruction when ex-
posed to the minute inspection by
greedy rivals. The components of
true fame must come from within
the individual• His character must
have clear moral outlines, his in-
telligence must be sufficient to cope
with every day problems, and he
must be able to easily acclimate
himself socially. Publicity may be
able to "ballyhoo" one into fame,
but if the proper underlying quali-
ties are lacking, he will soon crash
from his false macrocosm.--GR.
STATE REPRESENTATIVE
GIVES TALK IN ASSEMBLY
Last Thursday, Dr. Gardner, who
is a state representative, gave a
very educational talk on the state
legislature and its functions.
Dr. Gardner, who helps attend
to the different bills, told how they
were corrected, saying that often-
times a few commas, an extra let-
ter, or a period would change the
whole meaning of a bill. He also
told about the difficulties the legis-
lature sometimes has overfalse
claims, and what is done about
them.
The state representative ended
his talk by discussing the different
state institutions in Iowa, bringing
out their good points and their im-
portance to the people.
Dr. Gardner's talk was very in-
teresting, and we all hope that we
may have an opportunity to hear
him again.--PW.
STAFF DINNER
Friday evening the newspaper
staff gathered at the high school
for a seven o'clock dinner. The
dinner was served cafeteria style
in the home economics room. The
dinner was exceptionally pleasing
to the eye, since most of the food
of these "He-Men" type! Maxine:
"Jiri Flabetin," otherwise known as
"George". Just ask Maxine how he
signs them though. Why don't
some Iowans take lessons in tech-
tuque we wonder? We also noticed
that guitar in the picture! Keep
it up Maxine. A letter a week is
nothing to laugh at.
Thus we draw to a close our
foreign correspondence for this
week. We'll be back next week
with more news. We forgot to
mention that we have noticed the
topic of government has been bar-
red from all letters but Grace's.--

FRESHMAN FLASHES
Flash! Red hot from Lisbon come
rumors of Freshman romances!
Who is the certain someone who
can make Phyllis Franta's heart
do tricks? Why is Alberta Gaines
so happy lately? And what could
possibly be the reason for Junior
Brown's elation? Your Freshman
reporter says it's romance. Leona's
heart turns over when the latest
comes near, and Bernice Lein-
baugh's heart-throb can surely in-
crease her pulse. Lately she has
been very despondent, but Friday
she brightened up. I wonder why?
And what can be back of "You're
A Sweet Little Headache," the song
which is always being sung by
Frances lately? If you can answer
tbese, you're a genius.--FH.
