Page Eight Audience Greatly Interested In Talk By Morris Fishbein A combination of medical facts and a great sense of humor made the lecture fo Morris Fishbeln in the Cornell chapel last night one of the most popular talks of the year Speaking to a considerable crowd the head of the American ~Iedical association interspersed jokes and witty "(:racks" in his talk on "The Prolongation of Life." I)r. Fishbein named many great strides forward which the medical men have made in the past hun- dred years, expanding the life ex- pectancy from 33 years in 1825 to 67 years in 1940. Hc traced the development of vaccination, anti- toxins and innoculations. Heart disease now heads the list of diseases of death, with cancer second and pneumonia third. Au- tomobile accidents have greatly raised on the scale, and come fifth in the number of deaths per year. Tuberculosis is seventh. "High 'blood pressure," said Dr. Fisbbein, "is not a disease, it is a A comparison of this generation with the two preceding genera- tions, shows not only greater life expectancy, but also greater size. The young people of today at uni- versity entrance, average two inch- es taller and seven to ten pounds more in weight. In conclusion, Fishbein said that "a sensible amount of rest is a factor of the utmost importance to the prolongation of life." Following the lecture, Dr. and Mrs. Frank G. Brooks held open house for the speaker and those Corncll students interested in medicine and nursing. Mrs. IL P. Ink left today for Washington I).C. to attend the D. A. R. Centennial Congress. She is corresponding secretary of the state order of D. A. R. and will serve on the reception committee for candidates for national offices at the Centennial ~Mr. and Mrs. George Buck of Cedar Rapids were guests Sunday in the home of the former's mothea Mrs. Flora Buck. condition. Scout Leader to Speak One of five annual regional meet- ings in Region 8 of the Boy Scouts of America will be held in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, April 23, at the R'oosevelt Hotel. Scouts from Iowa will attend this meeting to which the V~aubeek area council, which includes IAnn, Jones anti Benton counties, will be hosts. At the evening banquet, Arthur A. Sehuck will give the principle address. Mr. Schuck is national di- has the advantage of the class! findings with the recommendation i of their instructor, Severin Soren- son, and Harold Nilsson of the Mar- ion soil conservation office, who has been assisting the class. In October the boys collected soil samples on which to run the acidity test. The tests showed that the lime requirement varied from 0 to 3 tons per acre. During winter class sessions the boys became familiar with the the- oretical side of soil conservation practices With the assistance of Mr. Nilsson and Mr. Sorenson, maps and plans were made showing how strip cropping could be put into practice on the Emerson farm. Tuesday the boys laid out four contour lines, using a spirit level, on which the shop boys had put homemade sights. These contour lines and the trip boundaries on either side were marked with a plow. This summer the boys will ob- serve the results of the strip crop- ping. The project will be of great interest to them as well as to the community as a whole. If the re- sults are favorable, strip cropping! may be adopted on many of the home farms of these boys. Mrs. Dillon Bridges entertained at a birthday party in honor of her son Jackie on Saturday.
