"~- " "-- There was too much to watch on this clear afternoon to spend any time trying to sleep on the plane. We set our watches back before reaching Detroit and it was arotmd 5 p.m. when dinner was served. A little of Ontario was crossed in what seemed a short time and Lake St. Clair indicated we were approaching Detroit. Here the plane passed just south of the Ambassador bridge. The tall buildings in down- town Detroit were visible. After passing Detroit nothing was identi- fied until we approached the south end of Lake Michigan. Itere the pilot said we were 15 miles from shore and would land 10 minutes ahead of time. The plane crossed over Chicago just south of the Tribune tower with the Municipal Pier and Merchandise Mart and many other buildings recognizable. LAND AT CHICAGO The pilot circled around towards the airport and came in on the same course as the plane did from Cedar Rapids on the previous Thursday. The Chicago airport was not nearly as busy or crowded on this Saturday evening as it was on the previous Wednesday evening when we stopped en route to New York. A little before 7 p.m. flight 249 for Maline, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines was called• The plane was well filled as it took off after wait- ing for several planes to land be- fore turning down the runway• The lights of Chicago and suburbs can be seen for some time after leaving the airport. I managed to get in a little sleep before the plane came down at Maline, Ill., where a number got off. It is 60 air miles from Maline to Cedar Rapids• The lights of Cedar Rapids can be seen before the airport is reached. We landed a few minutes ahead of time. Lloyd LeGrand was waiting for us and we were home soon after 9 p.m. Leaving New York City at 4 p.m. and being home at a little after 9 p.m. isn't bad for modern trans- portation. Traffic Violations Richard Hughes, Mt. Vernon, was filled $5 on April 10 for failure to stop at a stop sign 4 miles west of Mt. Vernon. Patrolman Jacobs filedI the charge.
