Contact Meeting At a township committee meet- ing held in the home of Mrs. Rob- ert Leigh on last Tuesday Mrs. Charlie Wickham gave the follow- ing report on the IAnn county con- tact meeting conducted in Cedar Rapids by the District Committee Woman, Mrs. J. R. Wallace. Just what is the contact meeting between the District Committee Woman and the county Farm Bu- reau like and what happens when it is held? Mrs. Wallace asked. The Farm Bureau organization is to do together for agriculture the things that we can not do as in- dividual farmers. The desire on the part of farmers to obtain agri- cultural education dates back to the early days of American History, but the first attempt along these lines in Iowa was the Van Buren County Fair held in the fall of 1842 or about four years before Iowa became a state. In 1853 the Iowa State Agricul- tural Society was organized at Fairfield and the first State Fair was held in that city in the fall of 1854. The State Fair during these early years was not only the sole agricultural educational institution in the state, but was also the first agricultural educational unit to re- I ceive tax funds The legislature i in 1855 voted funds for its support. This was the first effort in Iowa to use tax funds on agricultural !and homemaking subjects.
