Tells How To Ask For
Draft Deferment
What Linn County farmers can
do to help assure an adequate labor
supply was outlined this week by
J. F. Wager, chairman of the Linn
AAA Committee. The Director of
the Selective Service System has
asked all local draft boards to give
special consideration to deferment
of men needed in agricultural pro-
duction. The WPA is making an
effort to supply farm labor.
Mr. Wager said in ease a man
hell(red to be indispensahle to the
farm is drafted here is what to do:
(1) Vhen the Selective Service
questionnaire is received, ask defer-
lnent in Class 2, occupational defer-
ment; or, if there are dependents,
Class 3, dependency. (2) The em-
ployer or dependent should submit
to the local draft board Form 42 or
a letter properly witnessed and pre-
senting the reasons for requesting
deferment. The registrant shined
also present the facts and request
for deferment by letter if necessary,
in addition to tiT( statement in the
questionnaire. (3) If the local
i board does not grant the requested

Although advanced figures from
the Iowa Taxpayers Association in-
dicated a fiftecn pcr eent increase
in the total of the budgets of the
first 16 counties as compared to
those for this year, the proposed
IAnn county budget asks for $67,292
less money to be raised by taxes
than the 1941 budget.
This will make possible a re-
duction of approximately two-
thirds of a mill in the county levy
Supervisors have hoped that the
county levy could be lowered slight-
ly and it will be unless some change
is made at the budget ilearing on
August 121h,
Less money to retire bonded in-
debtedness and a mnaller widow's
pension fund make the lower levy
possible The state had ordered
the half mill levy for the widow's
pension fund cut to a quarter mill.
With $160,000 in bonds being re-
tired interest charges are less
$42,0(|0 in court house, poor fund-
ing and ~econdary road bonds nla-
tare in 1942 and will leave only
$196,00(| in court house bonds left.
The supervisors are to be en-
couraged and congratuhltcd for
actually reducing the county levy
