Recent figures issued by the govern-
ment estimate the farm population at
32,245,000 . . . the largest in 24 years
and near the all time high. This indi-
cates that modern transportation and
other factors have made the farm a

the trend is now away from the cities.

cup Lisbon Butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
cup milk
2 cups cake flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt
and sift together three times. Cream butter thorough-
ly, add sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time and mix well. Add flour, al-
ternately with milk, beating well after each addition.
Add vanilla Pour into two buttered 9-inch layer cake
pans and bake in a moderate oven, 375 F. for 25 min-
utes. Spread top and sides with Butter Icing and deco-
rate with whole nut meats.
