This is a view of the new addition showing the Seybold
automatic clamp cutting machine at the left, and the Eclipse
book and job folder with automatic feeder at the right.
Left to right is Forrest Siggins in front of the cutter,
Byron Jones, Ralph Hart, Frank Moore and Dick Busenbark
of the Hawkeye-Record staff.
In this picture you see the new addition and also part
of the No. 4 Miehle two revolution book press, which stood
next to the back wall before it was removed and the build-
ing extended 16 feet further north. The American Type
Founders spray gun can be seen over the delivery table
of the press. It sprays each sheet to prevent offset, the
ink from one sheet smearing on the next sheet. This press
is used for the high grade book and catalog work and the
Cornell Royal Purple is among the jobs printed on it.
This is the 00 Miehle press installed by C. I. Johnson
Manufacturing Co of St. Paul, Minn this summer and on
which the Hawkeye-Record is printed. Just beyond the
press is the Omaha folder into which the sheets go directly
from the press to be folded. Left to right is Forrest Siggins,
James McCutcheon and Frank Moore. The size of the press
is a little distorted by the fact that it was impossible to
locate the camera in the press room to show all of the press.
This press is capable of handling the finest kind of high
grade cut work, but will probably be used almost exclusively
on the newspaper as the smaller No. 4 Miehle is more con-
veniently used for most job work. Photos by Roberts

The Newspaper and Printing Office of today must
have equipment that will do its work efficiently and have
it operated by skilled workmen if it is to keep pace with
the times. The plant must be geared for rapid produc-
tion-and at the same time be capable of turning out
high quality work.
Time is an important factor even in the schedule
of weekly newspaper. The paper must go into the Post
Office on time. The Job Printing Department must be
prepared to turn out work without wasting precious
minutes.
INSTALL 00 MIEHLE PRESS
A Miehle 00 two revolution book and job press has
been installed to print the Hawkeye-Record and is avail-
able for use on job work when needed. A No. 4 Miehle
is regularly used for the larger job work and a Miehle
Vertical automatic press for the smaller job work.
Attached to the 00 Miehle is an Omaha folder
which takes the Hawkeye-Record sheets directly from
the press and folds them without their being handled.
Gone forever are the days when type was set by
hand and newspapers were published with a, "shirt tail
full of type," and a battered hand press. Modern equip-
ment is necessary to meet the ever increasing demands
for improved service.
In furtherance of this policy the Hawkeye-Record
has extended its building 16 feet to the rear. The addi-
tional space of the ground floor will be used as a paper
warehouse.
PRESSES FOR EVERY TYPE OF PRINTING
This makes three Miehle presses in the Hawkeye-
Record Office. Press erectors and printing equipment
salesmen will tell you that the Miehle is the standard of
comparison among two revolution cylinder presses and
the only press of that type they will guarantee to
register. By register is meant that a sheet run thru the
press twice will print the type in the exact spot each
time.
The new space on the first floor will house the
present Seybold automatic clamp paper cutter, Morri-
son Perfection wire stitcher, Wright paper drill, Eclipse
book and job folder and bindery work tables. The re-
arrangement of equipment will give needed space for
jobs in process and will make for more efficient produc-
tion.
MODERN TYPE SETTING EQUIPMENT
In addition to this modern press equipment the
Hawkeye-Record has a Model 14 Linotype and a Blue
Streak Model 8 Linotype for composition. There is a
large range of type faces available for all kinds of gen-
eral job and book work.
This Office Is Equipped and Our Workmen are Experienced In A Wide Range of Printing.
