MOUNT VERNON, IOWA.
The success of the modern college
is greatly attributed to the broader
views and lines upon which the up-to-
date, popular institution is conducted.
Moral suasion must carry the greatest
results with students old enough to at-
tend colleges, while a lot of petty rules
are annoying, not properly observed
and obnoxons m the extrenie to a per-
son of prol)e.r pride orsensc of appreica-
lion. hi recognition of these demands
importanL changes have recently been
made at Oberlin c,dlege. Prof. W. W.
Cressy, a former student of Cornell
college, has been appointed dean of the
men's department, an office created to
dispense with class monitors. Change
in the rules governing men of the col-
lege department follow. The seniors
and juniors are to be placed striekly on
their honor as to their observation of
regulations. The students can return
to their rooms at any hour of the night,
instead of being in at l0 o'clock, as
heretofore. They can use their own
