Mr. Day says the stock exchanges i
are largely to blame for the facti
that they have not been under-
stood as they have done little to
inform and educate the public. The
Midwest Exchange has had a repre-
sentative on the program at many:
bankers conventions recently to ex-
plain the stock exchanges to the
bankers as a start.
With the very high tax rate on
the larger incomes from which
much of the capital has come to
expand American industry, this
source does not supply the capital
needed today for continued expan-
sion.
Corporations as well as stock ex-
changes are turning to the people
of more moderate income, who are
not hit so hard by taxation, for their
capital needs. This really is be-
hind the present campaign to spread 1
information about stock markets i
and overcome the suspicion which
many people have towards them. I
With the present Securities and i
Exchange Act and the rules andi
regulations of stock exchanges, the~,
public is pretty well protected. You I
can lose money there the same as
anywhere else if you buy stock!~
when it is high and sell it when the'
price goes down.
Mr. Day expressed the opinion
that midwest corporations of moder-
ate size could do better by listing
its stocks v ith the Midwest Ex-
change than on the New York Stock
Exchange where it might be lost
in the shuffle with 1,800 other
stocks.
The Midwest Stock exchange as
a public market will list the securi-
ties of any qualified corporation.
It advocates, however, a minimum
of 150,000 shares or more and 1,000
stockholders or more, to insure that
the stock will have a free flow of
transactions.
Corporations whose securities are
dealt in on the Midwest Stock Ex-
change report regularly on earn-
ings, dividends and other corporate
developments. More a n d more
these corporations are giving the
stockholder up-to-date information
on what is going on in the company. !
