locker, this is the time of year to l
get the job done. That's the advice i b
of Francis A. Kutish, farm econo-
mist at lowa State College. ETE
Pork slaughter usually reaches
a peak in December Then it drops
off in January and February. It
begins picking up again in March
and April as the fall pigs go to
l market. That's why December and
again April or May are usually the
low months in the year for pork
prices.
I Wholesale pork prices have
i slumped sharply in the last 60 days. Every service feature of our establishment :
There have been some good buys in is included in our services.
!hams and loins lately, Kutish says
i Big reason behind the lower price
i of dressed pork has been the heavy Johnston & Morgan's
Funeral
Home
runs of hogs to market. Recent re-
ceipts have been the heaviest for
some time.
But farmers soon will be sell-
ing fewer hogs. As the hog runs
lighten, supply of fresh pork on
the market will drop off, too.
And we can expect higher live
hog prices, Kutish says. This
in turn will mean higher prices
for dressed pork.
i Kutish believes that we will have
to wait until next spring before we:
can expect to see dressed pork'~
prices as low as prevailed in mid-I
December. And even then they i
might not get as low as they are l
this fall. Inflationary pressures !
may be stronger then--affecting the i
demand for meat. Packers also
may be inclined to store more pork
then, because the expected smaller
1952 spring pig crop may cut back
pork output next summer.
SEED PRICES ARE UP
Turning to grass seeds, the USDA
reports that prices of all the main
grass and legume seeds have been
advancing this fall. Currently,
prices for alfalfa, red clover alsike
clover, lespedeza and sudan grass
are higher than last year. Only
sweet clover and timothy are under
last year. The farmer who gets his
grass or legume seed lined tip now
will be sure of his supply when
spring seeding rolls around. And "~
he may save some money by buy-
ing now.
