Hop- kins certainly has no business ex- perience and Murphy has no re- putation as a lawyer. The selec- tions .will probably be approved l)y the senate because many senators feel that a president should have the right to name his own cabinet• As one senator who is opposed to Hopkins, but who will vote for confirmation, said, "It isn't my carbinet.'' Charles J. Cash, Sr., who has written the editorials of the Ana- mosa Journal since long ~before this writer was in the newspaper busi- ness, died at his home in Anamosa a week ago. We have read his editorials for years. They were tempered with a human under- standing and fairness that made the reader respect the author. As a life long Democrat he was loyal to the party of his selection thru good times and bad times and well earned all of the recognition he re- ceived from that party. We will miss his editorial p~ge. WANT TO KNOW MORE AB(YUT THE "IOWA %VAY" A meeting of Republican leaders from several neaffby states met at Mason City Friday with the Iowa campaign managers. They wanted to know more about the "Iowa Way" of winning elections. State Chairman James Milroy of Vinton was present and acted as host to the visitors. The Iowa campaign attracted national attention this year. Great interest is still 'being taken in the Iowa Republican head- quarters setup. Arthur Evans, Chi- cago Tribune political analyst, places the Iowa headquarters sec- ond only to Pennsylvania, and says the Hawkeye unit functioned smoothly and effectively--Eagle Grove Eagle. Ethel Barrymore Will Appear In Cedar Rapids Most of the days are spent in the house reading and the nights, wbout :12 hours long, in sleeping. This keeps up until my will power and sat)it!on rate about one below ze- ro. Then to top it all off there comes New Year's Eve. You all know how one feels the morning after this event. All inall it is quite remarkable that any of us return to school at all. If it weren't for the thought of semester exams, I think that the effects of vacation would be stretched on over until time for spring fever• Did someone say something a~out abolishing Christmas vacation ? HEllE AND THERE Miss Reynolds gave her eighth grade social science class a test concerning the causes of the Civil war, which were tariff, states rights, and slavery• Miss Reynolds received this answer from one bright pupil "The south was tar!f- fled by the North." Bob Merritt is seen with Ruth Ru'ble very frequently• Evidently he has lost interest in Sutliff. We wonder whose class ring Betty Jean Messenger wears on a chain around her neck. Incidental- ly it's an Iowa City ring. Did you know that Oren Travis takes his daily nap during U. S• History. Mr. Carl awakened him from his dreaming the other day. The half and half party given by Pat, Tish and Gen certainly has created a sensation• We all wonder if Hiliis is still going with Marjorie Joy. Everyone has noticed that love- ly diamond ring Arlene Zimmer is wearing. Don't be surprised if you see Dave Hull driving a new Mercury Ford Around. Maybe it is a Christmas present. The hall conduct has improved somewhat since the drive on alan- nets conducted last week. NEWS BITS! At twelve-fifty many students were gathered in the hails, we saw a group bending over Arlene Zim- mer's hand and walked tip to see a prettysparkler, in fact three of them. We inquired as to the other party, and when she smiled we knew "that neighbor Weseman," has been playing "Chinese Check- era" again. Then we walked on down and we missed a dark haired, dark eyed girl, we searched in vain. We shouted, then we heard a SOB! Kenny Worrell, sat in a corner and he was the one who informed us, Cornelia had gone to Oklahoma." We cheered him up, anti left him Ethel Barrymore, famed daugh- with the thought, "there are many ter of the Drews and Barrymores "good-looking" girls, left here, and conceded to be the first lady of Kenny." We heard Kay murmur- the American stage, will appear in ing to a friend she "hadn't gone person, together with her original any where for ages,' Then she cast and New York production of slipped and told us she went "Whiteoaks," at the Iowa Theatre out for dinner Saturday night• Her in Cedar Rapids on Saturday after- noon and evening, January 7th. "Whiteoaks" is a dramatization pby the Canadian authoress Mazo de la Roche of her famous novel, "Whiteoaks of Jalna," the second novel of a series of five, all of which reached the "best seller" class. The principal character in the play, as it was in the books, is Gran ~Thiteoak, aged 101, who rules the household of the On- tario farm family. An advertisement carrying prices and full information regarding re- servations appears in this issue of our paper. lovely smile gave us the idea, that she was "holding out" on pals! I In Economics class Tiny Krumm, told us that men would rather have a pretty girl for a secretary, than a .man! The class decided that women should work. Miss Gump, likes to roller-skate, at least thats our decision when she talked to some girls, and yes, by the way! Charles Hodge, informed the Speech class that he would like to have Miss Gump for a ?Jurden on his shoulders! Poor Lovey, she's had an awful bad cold, and she hasn't been able to get around much!
